Spring is finally in full motion with the yellow sun shining and green grass growing, but would you be ready to get dressed up in a white dress or black tuxedo and walk down the aisle to be married? Back in late April of 1966, Keepsake Diamond Rings thought that graduating students would be ready for such a commitment. Offering “smart styling and the guaranteed perfect center diamond” to design the most ideal engagement ring, this jeweler knew how to grab the attention of their young love audience.

Spring has finally made its way to State College! Today, girls pull out their shorts and skirts at the first sign of warm weather, but back in March of 1960, plaid separates were the spring fashion must-haves. Fashion-savvy students in search of this spring essential went to Clearfield’s, where the prices were right and the plaid was rad.
The Daily Collegian’s readers also know what’s cool and casual for choosing Penn State’s most reliable news source. Be sure to download the app for instant access to the news that’s most relevant to you, or pick up our print edition.

Collegian Promotions Manager Julie Mastrine (junior-Public Relations), holding an entrant’s puzzle from the paper and calling the lucky winner.

Sam Solow (senior-psychology), picks up her prize at the Collegian office. “I never win anything, ever, so this is really exciting!” she said.

Today marks the 125th anniversary of The Daily Collegian, but today’s issue is almost unrecognizable to our modern-day readers. Designed to resemble the Collegian as it looked in the 1920s, today’s retro look symbolizes just how much the publication has evolved and grown over the years.
In today’s guest column, editor-in-chief Lexi Belculfine (senior-print journalism) says she looks forward to continuing the paper’s tradition of being Penn State’s most trusted news source.
“For the next 125 years, the Collegian will constantly change, adapt, and hopefully surpass standards, because this is the best way we can serve you, our readers,” Belculfine writes.
Our award-winning daily newspaper has come far since its original run as The Free Lance in 1887, but our core journalistic and business values have withstood the test of time. So cheers to looking so good at 125, and even better in the years to come!
Move over, Willy Wonka — The Daily Collegian is taking over. This week, we’re placing “golden tickets” in random copies of The Daily Collegian around campus, and it’s up to you to find them.
If you are one of the lucky few who finds a golden ticket, come to the Collegian’s office, 123 S. Burrowes St., by 3 p.m. next Wednesday, April 25 to present your ticket and have your picture featured in the paper!
Paint and Puzzles
Want to be a paint blaster or win two tickets and backstage passes to the “world’s largest paint party?” Thanks to The Daily Collegian and Levels Nightclub, you can have a unique experience at Dayglow’s sold-out concert at the Bryce Jordan Center on April 11.
Here’s what you need to do: Keep the color codes of the paint splatters running in the Collegian Monday-Thursday. Remember the color codes from each ad, then color in the puzzle board running in Friday’s paper. Hand in your completed puzzle at the Collegian’s office, 123 S. Burrowes St., for a chance to win two tickets and backstage passes, or a chance to be a paint blaster at Dayglow!
You haven’t been rewarded for art skills like this since grade school, so go ahead and give it a try. Maybe you’ll have the chance to leave Dayglow as as a paint-splattered piece of art yourself.
Entries will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 6.Winners will be chosen by raffle and will be notified by phone or email on Monday, April 9.
